A Funny Story

Here is a funny story that could be somewhat ironic. Anyone who is a regular reader of my blog knows I have two pet rats. Everyone in the family loves them though I was the one who (begged cried screamed) asked to get them. The rats are two females named Ophelia and Pandora. They are white with black markings. We spoil are little fur babies especially me by giving them lots of petting and people food. Everyone here pets them and holds them. They have a really big cage to live in. They even have a table with a play area for them. Just about every night we let them come out on the couch. They love love love to play hide and seek under blankets and pillows. As you can tell we love our rats. Here is the funny part. WE HAVE A MOUSE IN THE HOUSE!!! Yesterday morning my hsuband woke me up to tell me he heard something behind the fridge and thought it was a mouse. My first thought was maybe one of the rats got out. Checked and the rats were in there house sleeping away. So everyone in the family has to come into the kitchen to investigate this problem. My daughter moved everything from under the kitchen sink which is mostly cleaning supplies and such. Yep mouse droppings. So my son and I move the fridge out. I get behind it to start checking things out, and the mouse jumps out of the bottom of the fridge and runs across the floor. Here is the funniest part. I freaked out! I am screaming and jumping from a little tiny mouse. I don't if it was the being startled or what. My family found it amusing the mouse scared me even though we have rats that I hold all the time. So now we are on the hunt for the mouse. We can't have a mouse running around the kitchen. If I was not so afraid the rats would run away, I would let them loose in the kitchen. Rats do not like mice. They would hunt it down and kill it. So we weighed our options and decided to go with mouse traps. We do not like glue traps because that is just really cruel. Poison is out because we don't want the mouse crawling into a wall or something dying and stinking. So we set the mousetraps with peanut butter yesterday and were waiting to see what happened. Fast forward to today at dinner time. I am in the kitchen just getting dinner started and decide to check the traps. No mouse and no peanut butter. Ok so it seems we have a tricksie mouse. My husband comes out and fixes the traps up with peanut butter again. Funny part here again. He tried to put the peanut butter on while the trap was set. Duh! The trap went off and flew out of his hands bouncing on my chest. Ok can you say heart attack? Anyway he got the traps set and I continued to make dinner. I was in and out of the kitchen for 30 minutes preparing dinner. Just as dinner is getting finished I notice the trap on the floor by the oven has no peanut butter! Smart little mouse. I was in and out of there yet the mouse still snuck out ate the peanut butter and did not set off the trap. AACCKK!! Now my daughter has just told me the other two traps are clean of peanut butter too! Now I have to go bait the traps again. Maybe I will have better luck tonight. Oh yeah forgot to mention my bedroom is right off the kitchen. Think I will get sleep tonight?!

EDIT: Monday AM Mr Tricksy Mousy was caught! I feel kinda sad, but I CAN NOT HAVE A MOUSE RUNNING LOSE IN THE HOUSE!

a year ago, my (then) boyfriend and i had (so we thought) a mouse problem. things would disappear. big things, like the loaf of bread, bars of natural soap. we set mouse traps to no avail. one night, the local stray kitty was inhouse. the boyfriend heard crazy cat sounds and a scuffle coming from the living room, behind the couch. the stray kitty came out with her prize ... a big rat!

You can also buy humane traps that will catch the little mousey and you can take him (far) from your home to a nice natural habitat and set him free. These traps can also be used many many times. That way, your rats won't worry they may be next--they are related, you know!! Just a little hint...

I live an an old house (built in 1923) and every November the mice arrive. I don't like them either, but I've had to deal with them. Peanut butter doesn't work for me either! Somehow they manage to eat it and not set the trap off. Cheese really does work well. I have also used raw bacon with some success. Also, you probably know this, but it's likely there is at least one more. And if you don't work fast, they raise a family.
